This book has three goals: (1) to provide you with a concise overview of Secured Transactions that will be helpful whether you are taking the course or preparing for the bar; (2) to help you use multiple-choice questions to assess your understanding of the material and to improve your skills at taking multiple-choice exams; and (3) to develop your skills in statutory analysis and interpretation. Secured Transactions is a cumulative subject. You must begin by learning some basic concepts and vocabulary and then use those concepts and vocabulary to build your understanding of the subject. If you are working with this book as you take the course, you might find that the order of topics here differs from that used in your class. Don’t be concerned about that. As long as you see how all the pieces fit together, the order doesn’t really matter. I believe, however, that I have designed a sequence that flows logically, allowing you to learn in a coherent fashion. In addition, if you are reading the book for a final course review or for bar review, I think you will find it helpful to see the topics from a different organizational perspective. Although this book is not a detailed treatise, it emphasizes the main contours of the subject; if you are using it to prepare for the bar exam, I think you will find it addresses the main points on which you are most likely to be examined. You won’t know whether you understand a concept until you are asked to apply it to a particular fact situation. You will find at least one multiple-choice question at the end of each section that will ask you to apply your knowledge of the material to solve problems. In the analysis that follows each question, you will find not only the best response but also the reasoning process that led to that conclusion. The analysis will discuss the rules, usually found in the statutes, in the context of particular facts. Because you are learning skills of legal analysis, the questions and analysis will help you when you are assessed, whether the assessment uses multiple-choice questions or some other format.
